Outlook and Microsoft 365
Connect Outlook.com, Hotmail, or Microsoft 365 accounts when the tenant allows IMAP and SMTP authentication.
Status: Available.
Authentication: Microsoft OAuth2 / Modern Auth.
This page covers Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live Mail, MSN, Microsoft 365, and Exchange Online mailboxes. The Outlook/Hotmail option uses Microsoft's OAuth flow and fills the common IMAP and SMTP servers.

Before you begin
- Confirm IMAP access is enabled for the mailbox.
- Confirm authenticated SMTP (SMTP AUTH) is allowed for the mailbox or tenant.
- For Microsoft 365 work or school tenants, ask the administrator whether user or administrator consent is required.
Setup in PressedMail
- Open Settings > Email Connections and select Add Account.
- On Add an Email Account, choose Outlook/Hotmail.
- Start the Microsoft sign-in flow and approve the requested mailbox access.
- Return to PressedMail after Microsoft redirects you back.
- Run Test Connection to validate IMAP and SMTP.
- Save the account.
Modern Auth
Microsoft OAuth is available in PressedMail. A tenant can still block access through consent policy, Conditional Access, disabled IMAP, or disabled SMTP AUTH. Those provider policies must be changed by the Microsoft 365 administrator.
Microsoft 365 Tenant Considerations
- Microsoft 365 tenants may require administrator approval or consent before a third-party client can connect.
- Authenticated SMTP may be disabled per mailbox or for the whole tenant.
- Conditional Access policies can block third-party clients, even when the password is correct.
- IMAP may need to be enabled explicitly in the mailbox settings.
- Shared mailboxes may have separate permission requirements and often do not have their own password.
Troubleshooting
- Confirm the mailbox works in Outlook on the web.
- Confirm IMAP access is enabled and the tenant allows SMTP AUTH.
- For work or school accounts, ask the administrator whether legacy IMAP/SMTP AUTH is disabled or whether Conditional Access blocks the connection.
- If sign-in succeeds but the connection test fails, review tenant consent, IMAP, SMTP AUTH, and Conditional Access policies.
Security Recommendations
- Revoke the PressedMail connection in Microsoft when you remove the account.
- See Security and Privacy for the credential storage and access model.
